Community Services

Our Community Services program is designed to provide service and assistance to union members and their families in meeting problems outside of the realm of their collective bargaining agreements.  It is a Council program in cooperation with the United Way of the Bay Area. Tom Ryan is the Director of Community Services and can be reached at (415) 440-4809 x14 or Tom Ryan.

Services include, but are not limited to:

  • Information and Referral
  • Substance Abuse
  • Family Problems
  • Food
  • Housing
  • Health Care
  • Child Care
  • Tax-Supported Programs
  • Credit Counseling/Financial Assistance
  • Consumer Problems
  • Unemployment
  • Job Training

The Community Services (CS) program creates a safety net for members with problems by linking them to the agencies in the community that can help, by coordinating Information and Referral (I&R), emergency assistance, food distribution, workshops and other services tailored to the needs of your membership.

The Labor Council encourages each local to establish a Community Services Committee. Shop stewards and members can be trained as union counselors to provide the foundation for your committee.
